monster hunter world: iceborne pc review

Sahil Lala. Publisher In-house If Monster Hunter World ate up your time, Iceborne will eagerly take the leftovers. It demands you take it seriously, from the very first hunt; there is no time to get your sea legs back if you’ve stepped away. By tackle, I mean claim to be part of the ecosystem and that, by killing these monsters, they're somehow preserving things. It was also annoying that some of the new weapons are simple, slightly disappointing recolors of old models. The different sections of its map feel varied and exciting, from icy caverns to hot springs to snowy fields to acid-filled underground lairs. There’s a reason I gave the original release of Monster Hunter: World … Couple that with the polish on the multiplayer side and I continue to lose hours to this game. Fails to explore its themes but still delivers the series' most potent monster hunting yet. One of these is on every piece of Beta armor, allowing you to easily use powerful new Decorations that can come with two different skills in one. As a longtime Monster Hunter fan, I’ve hunted them all to oblivion in previous games, but seeing them reimagined and upgraded in Monster Hunter: World’s gorgeous engine feels like coming home to a long-lost best frenemy. Sure, I was excited for more entirely new monsters, but these fan-favorites deserved to be recreated. Seliana's flat and close-knit layout is so wonderfully convenient that I rarely wanted to go back to Astera. If the game's whole style was impractical outfits then maybe it'd sit better, but when the dudes are rocking elaborate but practical armour, it's sad to see the women stuck with mini skirts, their asses pushed into the camera through every crawlspace. Regardless of what you are turning them into, the new monsters themselves are awesome to fight and look at. Monster Hunter World is a much more stable PC game than it was at launch, and since Iceborne is an extension of the same build, it performs as you'd expect. There is a lot more however, with new region Hoarfrost Reach adding a whole biome to expand the delight at the heart of Monster Hunter: getting to traipse around in its ecosystems and see how its monsters interact with them. New Monsters in Monster Hunter World: Iceborne27 IMAGES. The quality-of-life improvements don’t stop at Seliana, either. Monster Hunter World: Iceborne's PC launch is mostly good, though some curious issues hold it back from true excellence. An extra graphical option for snow will tax your GPU RAM a touch more if you crank it up, but that's about it. The cosy new hub Seliana is a winter getaway full of delights, new mini games, and even saunas. There are pages of pet spots, all of which can now hold small groups of Endemic Life instead of just one. On the other hand, driving a monster into a wall felt inconsistent at first, but once we realized how reliant this attack is on the state of the monster, it became borderline insane – it can deal at least 1,000 damage and also knocks the monster down. Importantly, it all feels substantial and integrated in ways that complement what's already there, instead of just being gimmicks to artificially expand the game's scope. A few performance patches made 60fps at 1080p easier to hit for most mid-range PCs and improvements to mouse and keyboard controls have since made MHW feel right at home on PC, but it's still a hog at higher settings and resolutions. Beast mode. If you want to play Monster Hunter World: Iceborne at its prettiest, be warned that you need a beefy PC. Iceborne also clearly wants you to upgrade fast, as early armor can be hilariously cheap to craft. World had its extreme challenges, but they were tucked away in late- and post-game content. New Monsters in Monster Hunter World: Iceborne. Updated: 21 Apr 2020 1:09 am. Every weapon type has received a couple new moves or combos – ones that don’t completely change how they handle or anything, but add a bit more nuance for experienced users. That meant I was going to have to wait to get my hands on the expansion. Monster Hunter World: Iceborne review by Mick Fraser on . It keeps that winter wonderland from ever getting dull, though it was never at much risk of that to begin with. Capcom has made this for their dedicated fanbase, and to its credit, managed to offer up not just something that will satisfy the desire for new content, but provide a new structure for the game’s hunts that goes beyond simply offering 'more'. A PS4 code for Monster Hunter World: Iceborne was provided by Capcom for this review. Summary: Monster Hunter World: Iceborne is the highly anticipated massive expansion to Monster Hunter: World, the best-selling Capcom title of all time with more than 12 million units shipped worldwide adding to the series total of more than 53 million units to date. I've spent hundreds of hours in it between both the Xbox One and PC versions. Subspecies are great, but those Paolumu and Pukei-Pukei are still a bit too familiar (especially when the visuals of their armor sets and weapons are often just reskins). Of course part of that feast is a plethora of cutscenes that construct a clumsy storyline the game could have done without. Developed and published by Capcom on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC, it's a full-fledged companion to the already lengthy action RPG/monster hunting extravaganza. My main weapon is the Insect Glaive, which has two new mid-air attacks that are fairly basic, but you can now also use slinger ammo to power up your Kinsect. There's always been an unease for me in playing these games where I'm asked to go out, invade the habitats of these species and kill them to make the next set of armour and weapons. They really do feel like new fights, but only to a certain extent. That's no easy feat given the game's elaborate nature, and doubly so when Iceborne piles on new mechanics. Developer Capcom What is it? Monster Hunter World was an exercise in refinement upon its release in early 2018. While the story is (once again) pretty much just there to pull you through the bulk of the new content, Iceborne adds a welcome new emphasis on its cast. The endgame is a promising new kind of format for the series that makes its hunts feel more organic, instead of the trawls through the quest board that the game utilises most of the time. While we opted to do a separate review for Monster Hunter: World's initial PC Launch in 2018 as it was the first of the series to reach the platform, World's PC port has more than proven itself since then – thanks in no small part to many helpful updates along the way. One of the most tangible tweaks is an entirely new mechanic that lets you ride small monsters either toward the monster you are hunting, following its tracks, or a location you set on your map. All of this gets put to use with a vital overhaul of the games social space, with the Seliana Gathering Hub giving players an area where they can spend time together between hunts—letting you craft and access all the vendors alongside one another. I want to be clear about how much I enjoyed fighting Iceborne’s monsters, how creative and exciting they are, because I do have one bone to pick – but it’s a complaint veteran Monster Hunter fans might not have as much of a problem with. My favorite spot was a frozen cliff face where whole sections of the ground can come crumbling down, dropping you to an underground area far away if you don’t escape to stable footing in time. By Joe Skrebels. I gave it a 10/10 on PS4, and made it my personal Game of the Year for 2019, despite it not technically being a new release. Placing pets in your Astera rooms is fun, but this is on another level entirely. It pushes Monster Hunter into a much more readily shared experience, making the game feel like a nightly event. Link Official site. You can access Master Rank in Iceborne simply by completing the main quest in Monster Hunter: World, making it more accessible than once thought. Crucially, while it made me sad to leave my lovely Xeno’Jiiva wings behind, this reset was far more exciting than frustrating. The new additions offer just enough variety to keep the innovation train rolling, while making sure it's familiar enough to veterans. The new fights feel crafted to poke at the weak points in a player's preparation and tricks. Without spoilers, these characters have actual story arcs this time – they’re still pretty shallow, but it made the story more engaging and far less forgettable than the first. Posted: 7 Aug 2018 3:00 pm. With every graphical option set at max and at 4K resolution, my poor RTX 2070 struggles to provide a consistent 30fps experience. This tool lets you grapple onto a monster and either wound a part, change its direction, or try to drive it into a wall, depending on what you do. It cuts out so much of the tedious in-between of hunting when a monster runs away, especially one you’ve fought a dozen times before. A Subspecies like the Coral Pukei-Pukei does more than just color it red, drop it in the Coral Highlands, and replace its poison with water – it has new special moves, new behaviors, and that change in location can make a tangible difference. Thursday, Feb 13 2020 10:13AM. Thankfully this didn’t happen too often, but the inconsistency of some Rarity 9 weapons being craftable on their own and others requiring the previous weapon to upgrade from was aggravating all the same. Let me just say, it was well worth the wait. There's so much substantial new stuff here, so much to see and do, it feels like one of those ludicrous platters the hunters are served before a quest. You didn’t have to be an expert to succeed, which made it more newcomer-friendly. If you like Monster Hunter World, this is more of the same at its core. Monster Hunter World: Iceborne PC review summary In Short: An essential purchase for any Monster Hunter fan, that also happens to be one of Capcom’s best ever PC ports. When they showed off Iceborne for the first time, I was all in. To help with this endeavor, players can now create a set of defender gear, designed to handle all monsters from that game, at little cost. As an expansion, Monster Hunter World: Iceborne requires that players have completed the main story in the base game. But that content will make its way to PC eventually, and (regrettably) waiting patiently to play with all of those cool new toys will be something veteran PC players like myself are used to already. Monster Hunter World: Iceborne adds loads of impressive monsters and tons of quality-of-life improvements to an already incredible game. This expansion picks up after the end of the base game’s main campaign, but I was curious how it would tempt me away from my High Rank armor and weapons, which were full of augments and synergistic skills I’d grown so used to. Keep that in mind if you'd prefer to go in blind! Form suffers a little for function here, as the drab white and grey of Seliana make it nowhere near as lovely as the ramshackle ships and colorful foliage of Astera, but it’s so wonderfully convenient that I rarely wanted to go back. It is worth noting, however, that more monsters will be added for free post-launch (similar to the base game) with the returning Rajang the first to arrive next month. 2018’s Monster Hunter: World was a successful update to the long-running beast-slaying series. Platforms: PS4 (reviewed), Xbox One and PC MonsterVine was provided with a PS4 code for review. Until then I'll still enjoy the platter they're offering, but it can't help leaving me feeling a little empty at times. If there's one disappointment besides the iffy storyline, it's the fact that the game still has gendered armour sets and insists on making half of the women's outfits a combo of boob armour and bikinis. Enter Iceborne’s all-new Master Rank missions with an entirely new tier of equipment where Bone and Alloy Armor – the bottom-of-the-barrel basic stuff – has a whopping 114 base defense. It’s that Iceborne relies too heavily on Subspecies and Variants of existing monsters. 4.5 Out Of 5 Stars. Master Rank gear offers a jump in power that truly leaves High Rank in the dust. Every weapon type has received a couple new moves or combos that don't change them drastically but can add a touch of freshness to a familiar moveset. There was a problem. Monster Hunter World: Iceborne is an expansion that is almost a fully-sized game on its own, and the game doesn’t feel complete anymore without it. Visit our corporate site. Monster Hunter: World Iceborne's rocky PC launch still haunts its Steam reviews. While this is not an entirely new game in feel or structure when compared to Monster Hunter: World, it adds a new story nearly as large as the base game’s with almost as many new monsters to kill, carve, and wear like a celebratory tuxedo. But my favorite changes were ones that more noticeably influenced how a monster behaved, like Tzitzi-Ya-Ku now hopping to change direction in the middle of its signature flash-stun attack – it’s awesome in the completely infuriating sort of way, but I love that it manages to make that fight a little harder without just bumping up numbers. Couple that with innumerable quality-of-life improvements (plus a few exciting surprises along the way) and Iceborne manages to hit the high bar set by Monster Hunter: World no matter what you call it. You’ll return to the mainland of the New World a fair amount, but there’s actually a great balance struck between exploring this beautiful new playground and facing fresh threats in familiar places. Monster Hunter World: Iceborne PC Review PC and chill. Monster Hunter World: Iceborne Review | New Weapons Coming In Clutch. It took me longer than I would have liked to get my hands on these cool new toys, as most of the needed materials don’t arrive until much later. a mere moment away from each other. Yet the better Capcom gets at this, the more convincingly animated and sounding their beasts, the greater the tension between what the game says it is and what it is to actually play. This is clearly a location that was designed with usability in mind, and its spiderweb of paths makes moving around easy while keeping all of your needed stations (the Resource Center, the Canteen, the Blacksmith, etc.) Some people can stick with the Monster Hunter format for thousands of hours, and more power to them – I was fine saying farewell after 130 hours. Engaging as its loop is, as enthralling as its fights are, I've always been disappointed that they've created such a rich ecosystem and the only thing they can ask me to do in it is murder everything. Release: January 9th, 2020 On: Windows From: Steam Price: £35/$40/€40. Where World stretched eight tiers of rarity over its roughly 40-hour campaign, Iceborne has to stretch just four tiers over a similar length, making weapon progress feel ever so slightly stunted in a way getting new armor doesn’t. This new region keeps you out in the world, keeps the monsters coming and reacts to the ones you hunt, evolving as you play. Iceborne also continues World’s trend of downright incredible music, as I’ve been whistling Seliana’s lovely theme song for the better part of a month. PC hunters, our wait is almost over! If it's not the cold eating at your stamina, it's monsters dripping explosive goo everywhere or wiping you off the map by summoning waves of water. Each piece of the Master Rank Jagras set, for example, only needs one of each of its required materials, acknowledging that you didn’t fly across the ocean to a snowy new land just to immediately go back to the Ancient Forest and hunt Great Jagras all day. Like the regions of its game world, Monster Hunter feels alive, bursting at the seams with things to try and, eventually, master. In case you missed it, you can watch our review of the base game above or read it here. Whether they're collapsing ice shelves or tearing up trees for battering rams, there's a sense of connection between its creatures and their surroundings that sells a rich, tactile world. The line between an expansion and a full-blown sequel is one Monster Hunter World: Iceborne comes close to blurring into oblivion. First things first: you need to be Hunter Rank 16 to access Monster Hunter World: Iceborne, which basically … I'll make this short and sweet. Honestly, there isn’t really a dud amongst them. While the constant need for Hot Drinks and the slow pace of moving through heavily snowy areas can be tedious at times, the Hoarfrost Reach is a fantastic addition to World. No, for real, there's hot pools now. But let’s get into the meat and potatoes of Iceborne: the gear. Or so I thought. Comment. Iceborne is exciting and creative throughout, reiterating Monster Hunter: World’s place as one of the very best games of this generation. But the juxtaposition between these elements becomes harder to reconcile when the game keeps drawing attention to them. But more than that, the room itself is customizable to a hysterical degree: floor type, wall type, furniture, curtains, paintings, hanging decorations, items on shelves, plant life, and the color, pattern, or wood grain of many of those things can be changed to your liking. I need a new review scale just for Monster Hunter World: Iceborne. Monster Hunter World: Iceborne Developer: Capcom Price: $40 if you own Monster Hunter World, $60 for the base game and Iceborne bundle. By Peter Glagowski Jan 12, 2020. That is, unless I … When it comes to the monster hunting itself, Iceborne is Monster Hunter at its peak. It seems as though a billion tiny changes have been made across the board, including tweaking the UI, how you interact with certain systems, and more. Iceborne does dabble in some alternatives with a new sidequest asking you to go out and document the tribes of cats in the world with a camera. Expect to pay £35/$40 The imagination on display is maintained right through to the final fight, finding ways to surprise and challenge even the most experienced of hunters. While the snowy new location called the Hoarfrost Reach is the focal point of Iceborne, only about half (at most) of the campaign is spent there. That realization made me very thankful it doesn’t take up one of your two tool slots. Monster Hunter World: Iceborne is available now for PS4 and Xbox One, with the PC version coming in January 2020. Minor equipment spoiler warning! The only major mark against it is that the PC version of Iceborne is still lagging behind its console counterparts in terms of updates and post-launch content, much of which builds on the already top-notch host of monsters and quality-of-life adjustments Iceborne brought at release. Console players have been able to enjoy a range of new content as well as Master Rank quests already while PC players have been left salivating waiting for … If these games are going to continue to ask me to think about their world then they need to spend more time entertaining the notion that its hunters are the bad guys. It’s a needlessly elaborate system that affects nothing at all, but that didn’t stop me from spending hours of my time and WAY too many research points buying and customizing this space to my liking. Once this happens, you’re brought over to … Yet rather than actually address this or just go on ignoring this aspect of its world building, Iceborne lands on an awkward middle ground, drawing attention to the moral bankruptcy of its characters with a nonsense lie. For an hour or two I got to see what Monster Hunter might be like if it were more Pokémon Snap, and the result was surprising. None of it will flip the way you play Monster Hunter on its head, but they’re meaningful enhancements that show Iceborne is intent on doing more than just adding monsters. … I say “nearly” not because I feel Tigrex and others have been nerfed, but rather that I have gotten better since I first fought them. As such, Iceborne is just as extensive and exciting on PC as it is on PS4 or Xbox One. Iceborne is a mix of new monsters, regions, mechanics and a whole new endgame, all geared towards veteran players. Master Rank monsters are stronger and more resilient too, but these tweaks made them feel different to fight from the base game’s buffed up Tempered versions. Everything in it is a good challenge, but it’s also not quite the spike in difficulty veterans may have been hoping for after honing their skills in the base game – especially if you’ve been taking down tempered monsters for the last year (though I bet even Extreme Behemoth will get a fair bit easier with Master Rank gear). And that difficulty is a tricky thing. I was able to stubbornly hold onto the High Rank armor I’d worked so hard to get for the first half-dozen quests or so, but when I finally decided to upgrade my total defense jumped more than 300 points in a single trip to the forge. Avoiding spoilers, Iceborne’s endgame shakes things up in a very unexpected way. Monster Hunter World: Iceborne is a complete, paid expansion for Capcom's massively popular Monster Hunter World series. Monster Hunter World: Iceborne isn’t for the casual hunter. Tigrex, Nargacuga, Brachydios, and Glavenus (each of which are flagship monsters of previous installments), plus more have found a new home with Iceborne, and I’m ecstatic to have them all in one place. and yet that the characters discuss it suggests Capcom are at least aware of the dissonance in its story. It’s a wonderfully self-aware decision, leaving the classic Monster Hunter equipment grind to the more interesting fights. Monster Hunter World: Iceborne Review. The story this time around is just as amusing and inconsequential as the original: monsters are behaving erratically, a dangerous new elder dragon has appeared, and an exciting snow-covered land unlike any of the others has been discovered. A bigger change, no matter what weapon you’re using, is the addition of the Clutch Claw. This helps any Master Rank armor set offer more than just a numerical draw. Seliana’s Gathering Hub is also a cut above, full of extravagant saunas and pools to sit in and interactable foot baths where you can pet and play with your palico. Just as I didn’t come to Iceborne to fight Great Jagras, Master Rank or not, I especially didn’t think I’d have to go back and fight a bunch of Low Rank Legiana or a now trivial Vaal Hazak five times in a row just to get the materials I needed to build up to the new and exciting weapon I actually wanted. That all said, I was happy to see that Iceborne introduces subtle changes to old monsters as well. These fights are fun ways to turn an encounter I knew like the back of my hand entirely on its head, and I absolutely love that about them. Stuff like not having to return to your room to change your Palico’s equipment, getting a headquarters-specific radial menus to use emotes, and being able to fire your slinger with your weapon drawn. A true beast of an expansion, Monster Hunter World: Iceborne adds a boatload of impressive new and returning monsters and improvements to an already incredible game. If you're already a fan and want to know as simply as possible if Iceborne justifies its price tag, then let me put it like this: I had 200 hours in World before this expansion; I've racked up almost another 200 since I started it. This monster taxi service is leaps and bounds faster than running, and makes the time spent in transit feel useful because it even allows you to use items or sharpen your weapon while riding. However, the ones that do use unique models were often among the coolest in World so far, like the return of a Rathalos hammer that is literally just the entire dragon’s head on a stick. Every weapon tree has been extended, with the previous peak of Rarity 8 now potentially stretching all the way up to the ever-sparkling icons of Rarity 12. Monster hunter World was my game of the year when it released. Once an incredibly niche series, Capcom has turned Monster Hunter into its most successive franchise to date. The grappling claw that lets you latch onto monsters and try to steer them into obstacles opens up a whole new skillset to master, and one that changes everything in the base game too. Seliana, the new town established just outside of the Hoarfrost Reach, is exciting for a different reason: it’s flat. Even if they never feature in the story or get a Subspecies, monsters get more than just more health in Master Rank (though they do get a helluva lot of health too, so fights can last far longer than you may be used to). 0. Monster Hunter World: Iceborne is an excellent expansion so large that it almost feels like a sequel. Thank you for signing up to PC Gamer. Monster Hunter: see deal. But if you're at all interested in Monster Hunter beyond a time sink then Iceborne complicates World in both incredibly interesting and deeply disappointing ways. Bestest Beasts. Iceborne isn’t just DLC, it’s a whole new game in its own right. The main campaign took me about 40 hours to reach the credits, and that was at a somewhat leisurely pace with a bit of grinding mixed in to improve my gear. With Monster Hunter World, it seems like Capcom took the PC port seriously. Reviewed on Nvidia GeForce GTX970, Intel i7-4790K, 16GB RAM You will receive a verification email shortly. Worse, the other half of the women's armour is great, stylish stuff. We encourage you to read our updated PRIVACY POLICY and COOKIE POLICY. With World the discomfort was extreme at times, beating monsters till they limped then being asked to lop off their tails to hear whines and squeals. It's a small thing but a glimpse of what a kinder game could be like, making it all the more apparent what a cruel game Monster Hunter is. PC Gamer is part of Future US Inc, an international media group and leading digital publisher. A new chef named the Grammeowster contrasts the Meowscular Chef’s style by cooking with love and delicacy as felynes bake bread and mix stew around her, the new forge is stunning to look at, and the crisscrossing paths and intimate layout of the town give it a much younger feel than the decades-old Astera. Here’s a quick comparison for context: a typical piece of World’s best High Rank armor will give you 72 defense, which can then be bumped up to 92 if you augment and upgrade it to the max. As difficult as it is, Iceborne also provides a ton of boons to help you through each fight. The craft that goes into all the details of these spaces is absurd and so vital to offsetting the unpleasant moments where you brutally murder a monster fighting for its life. Future US, Inc. 11 West 42nd Street, 15th Floor, The new content is substantial, but the sheer amount of improvements, extensions to existing ideas and game changing additions offered up alongside the new area and monsters makes it so easy to recommend. I also love that returning monsters like Tigrex (my archnemesis from Freedom 2) is nearly as tough as I remember. Learning to avoid the Nightshade Paolumu’s clouds of sleep-inducing smoke or its new wildly erratic mid-air attack is exciting, but it’s still not as exciting as fighting any of Iceborne’s entirely new monsters - or even the returning ones that are simply new to World. Still, it’s a wonderful surprise and more than worth getting to and spending time with after you’ve “beaten” Iceborne. With the High Resolution Texture Pack installed and everything turned up, it runs 60-90 fps depending on the action with a GTX 2080 and an i9-9900K. While this review keeps monster and story spoilers to a minimum, the video does show off new weapons and armor from the early-to-mid points of Iceborne's campaign. But I can't say I don't smile mischievously when my Fifth-Fleet friends complain about Tigrex's erratic attacks in Iceborne!
